Background & Challenge
A leading smart transportation solutions provider in Hong Kong, with a business portfolio covering core areas like intelligent roadways, logistics, and mobility, plays a critical role in the city’s smart city initiatives. The stability of its IT systems directly impacts the quality of public services.
Affected by VMware’s shift to a subscription model, the company faced surging costs and the challenges of product lock-in. It urgently required an alternative solution to lower its Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), repurpose its existing HPE servers and SAN storage, and ensure business continuity through a seamless migration. A key requirement was a platform with open APIs for robust integration with its existing monitoring systems.
Solution
The client selected ZStack Cloud and implemented a three-stage migration strategy:
Phase 1: Assessment and Planning: The existing environment was first assessed to create a detailed migration roadmap. ZStack’s agentless ZMigrate tool was used to connect directly with VMware APIs, enabling comprehensive migration planning and simulation.
Phase 2: Implementation and Business Continuity: The company’s existing hardware was repurposed to build a unified private cloud platform. Business continuity was guaranteed through rapid, second-level fault recovery capabilities, ensuring services remained online.
Phase 3: Integration and Automation: ZStack’s open APIs were leveraged to automate resource management and integrate seamlessly with the company’s existing Zabbix monitoring platform. This achieved true centralized monitoring and operational control.
Customer Benefits
Significant Cost Optimization: The company achieved a 50% reduction in overall TCO by fully repurposing its hardware assets, thereby escaping subscription pressures and vendor lock-in.
Guaranteed Stability & Business Continuity: The agentless, online migration ensured a smooth transition with zero downtime. Rapid, second-level fault recovery capabilities have minimized the risk of service interruptions, safeguarding continuous business operations.
Upgraded Operational Efficiency: API-driven integration and centralized monitoring enabled the automation of resource management, leading to a dramatic improvement in overall O&M efficiency.
Technological Independence: The open ecosystem of ZStack provides the company with the freedom to choose its own technology path, breaking vendor dependency and creating a flexible foundation to support future business evolution.
